FAQS

Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most

  1. To promote the unique and special skills, training and experience of physician anesthesiologists in dental office sedation.
  2. To promote the recruitment and mentorship of medical students and anesthesia residents into dental office anesthesia.
  3. To provide a national network to help other physician anesthesiologists enter the dental office arena.
  4. To provide education and promote patient safety for the dental anesthesia community.

By far, physician anesthesiologists receive the most intensive and extensive training compared to other dental anesthesiologists and anesthetists. Anesthesiologists have 12 to 14 years of education, including medical school, and must also complete a rigorous 4-year residency program after medical school.  Overall, this encompasses between 12,000 -16,000 hours of clinical training, often taking care of the sickest patients in emergency situations and for the most complicated surgeries. In addition, after completing their anesthesia residency program, most anesthesiologists continue to obtain valuable and intense clinical experience working in the hospital setting for several years.

As a result, patients can be assured that their anesthesiologist has completed the most rigorous training program available for anesthesia providers and has amassed an abundance of clinical experience that simply cannot be duplicated by other healthcare providers.

  1. We provide a national network of other anesthesiologists who work in the dental arena. We can offer mentorship, support and feedback to anesthesiologists looking to enter the dental arena.
  2. We advocate for the unique skills and strengths of anesthesiologists in dental and oral surgery offices. We also keep track of state legislation to help promote regulations that offer fair and safe access for dentists, oral surgeons, and patients who wish to work with anesthesiologists in their offices.
  3. We offer a Certificate of Excellence program, so that anesthesiologists can promote their experience and expertise in providing safe, effective anesthesia in dental offices.

Yes, membership is only open to MD or DO anesthesiologists.
